Overview
A rigid box is built, not folded. Greyboard is cut and formed into a permanent shell, then wrapped in printed paper, specialty stock or fabric — which is why it holds its shape, carries weight and reads as premium before the lid is lifted. Yuan Packaging has been making them in Huai'an, Jiangsu since 2000, on two Hongming 6418K automated box lines with hand finishing for the details a machine cannot judge.
Most projects arrive as a product and an idea rather than a dieline. Our structural team works back from your product dimensions, the weight it has to carry and how you want it to open — then produces a presentation-quality sample in 5–7 working days so the fit, the wrap tension and the finish can be judged in the hand rather than on screen.
Wrap printing runs on our Koenig & Bauer Rapida 106 eight-colour offset press, which holds 0.1 mm registration at 18,000 sheets per hour — the reason foil, emboss and spot UV can be stacked on one surface without the edges wandering. Finishing, insert fitting and final inspection happen in-house, and export cartons are packed to survive the container rather than the showroom.

Lift-Off Lid (Top & Base)
The classic two-piece box our Hongming 6418K lines are built around. A controlled friction fit gives the slow, quiet lift that buyers associate with luxury.
Magnetic Closure
A hinged lid with concealed magnets that snaps shut positively. Suits presentation sets that will be opened and closed repeatedly at retail.
Book-Style Hinged
Opens on a spine like a hardcover book. Gives you a printable inside cover — useful when the story matters as much as the product.
Drawer / Slide
A tray that slides from an outer sleeve, usually with a ribbon or die-cut pull. Distinctive to open and efficient to pack.
Shoulder-Neck Box
An inner neck raises the base above the lid line so the lid seats on a defined shoulder — a precise, engineered look for spirits and fragrance.
Multi-Bottle Presentation Sets
Rigid outer with fitted internal cradles for one, two or more bottles, including travel-retail and promotional multi-bottle carriers.

Greyboard
The dense structural core of a rigid box.
Not printed — it is wrapped. Thickness is specified against the weight the box carries and the opening feel you want.
Coated One Side (C1S)
Coated on the printing face, uncoated on the reverse.
The default carton and wrap board. You are paying for coating only where the print goes, so it is the economical choice whenever the inside face is not seen.
Textured & Felt-Marked
Embossed linen, laid and felt surfaces.
Carries a tactile identity with no extra finishing pass. Print sits softer on texture — fine detail and photographic images lose bite, so it suits type and blind emboss better than imagery.
Leather Grain
An embossed hide pattern on paper.
Used on rigid box wraps where the brief asks for leather without the cost, the weight, or the sourcing questions.
Finishing options
Hot Foil Stamping
Metallic foil applied by heated die, registered to the print.
Gold, silver, copper and coloured foils. Applied flat before any wrapping or forming, so registration is controlled on a sheet rather than on a curve.
Embossing
Raised relief pressed into the surface from behind.
Can be registered over foil for a sculpted metallic mark. Sequence matters: emboss after foil is standard, and reversing it damages the foil surface.
Spot UV
Gloss varnish applied to selected artwork elements.
Highest contrast over a matte or soft-touch base. On a gloss laminate it barely reads — the base finish decides whether spot UV is worth paying for.
Soft-Touch Lamination
A velvet matte film laminated to the printed surface.
Changes how the pack feels more than how it looks, and hides fingerprints on dark artwork. The most requested finish on premium spirits and skincare.

Greyboard Core
The structural body of the box. Board thickness is specified per project against product weight and the opening feel you want.
Coated Art Paper Wrap
The standard wrap for full-colour offset printing. Takes foil, emboss, spot UV and lamination cleanly.
Specialty & Textured Papers
Felt-marked, laid and embossed stocks that carry a tactile identity without any added finishing pass.
Fabric & Linen Wraps
Textile bonded to the board for the highest tactile tier. Foil stamping is possible; test pieces are made first.
Kraft & Recycled Board
FSC-certified or recycled-content board where the specification calls for it, with water-based inks and adhesives.
Inserts & Linings
EVA foam, moulded card, satin and flocked trays cut to the product so it sits still in transit and presents square on opening.

Hot Foil Stamping
Gold, silver and coloured foils applied by heated die. The most common request on spirits and festival gift boxes.
Embossing & Debossing
Raised or recessed relief, including registered emboss over foil for a sculpted metallic mark.
Spot UV
Gloss varnish on selected artwork elements — highest contrast when it sits on a matte or soft-touch base.
Soft-Touch & Matte Lamination
A velvet matte film over the wrap. Improves scuff resistance on dark artwork as well as changing the feel.
Die-Cut Windows & Shapes
Cut-outs in the lid or sleeve, with or without a clear patch, to reveal the product or an inner printed layer.
Ribbon, Cord & Hardware
Pull ribbons, tie closures, magnets and reinforcement fitted during assembly rather than added afterwards.

- Pantone references and physical samples are used where the selected print process supports them. The approval method follows the substrate, artwork and process.

What drives the cost
Structure dominates here. A rigid box is formed, wrapped and largely assembled by hand, so it will always sit above a folding carton of the same dimensions — and the gap widens with every finishing pass and fitted insert. If budget is the binding constraint, change the structure before you strip the finish.
Quantity
Most of the cost of a print job is set-up — plates, dies, make-ready, the first good sheet. Doubling a run rarely doubles the price, which is why it is worth asking for two or three volumes on the same quote.
Structure
A rigid box is formed, wrapped and often assembled by hand; a folding carton is die-cut and glued in one pass. Structure is usually the single biggest difference between two otherwise identical packs.
Material
Board grade and wrap stock. Specialty and textured papers cost more per sheet, but can replace a finishing pass — sometimes the cheaper route to the same effect.
Finishing passes
Each of foil, emboss, spot UV and lamination is a separate pass through a machine. Two effects cost roughly twice one, so the question is always which effect earns its place.
Tooling
Dies, emboss plates and foil blocks are one-off costs carried by the first order and reused on every repeat. Repeat runs of an approved specification are materially cheaper than the first.

What is the minimum order quantity for a rigid gift box?
Premium gift boxes with complex finishing are typically 500–1,000 units. The exact figure depends on the structure, the wrap material and how many finishing passes the design needs — send the brief and we will confirm it against your specification.
Can I see a sample before committing to production?
Yes, and we recommend it for every new specification. Our prototyping facility produces presentation-quality samples within 5–7 working days, and the sample cost is credited against your first approved production order.
How long does production take?
For most products the standard lead time is 15–20 working days after artwork approval. Complex gift boxes — multiple finishing passes, fitted inserts, hardware — typically need 25–30 working days.
Should I choose a rigid box or a folding carton?
Rigid boxes are pre-formed and ship assembled — they protect better and feel more substantial, but cost more per unit and take more container space. Folding cartons ship flat and suit higher volumes. Our journal guide compares the two in detail.
Can you make the insert as well as the box?
Yes. EVA foam, moulded card, satin-lined and flocked trays are cut to your product and fitted during assembly. If you can send the product or a dimensional drawing, the insert is developed alongside the box at sampling stage.
Can you match our Pantone brand colours?
Yes — our Koenig & Bauer Rapida 106 press runs Pantone spot colours as well as CMYK. Send a physical Pantone reference with the digital files; screen values alone are not a reliable target on coated, uncoated and textured stocks.
Do you offer FSC-certified or recycled materials?
Yes. We are ISO 14001:2015 certified and offer FSC-certified or recycled-content board, water-based inks and adhesives, and paper-based insert alternatives to foam.
